Regional Award Winner: Volunteer of the Year – Andy Worsey

We are pleased to announce Andy Worsey as the winner of the Swim England West Midlands Volunteer of the Year Award 2024.

Andy is a volunteer from Newcastle Staffs Swimming Club, giving up his time to be the Membership Secretary on the committee. His dedication and passion for the club, and all its people, made Andy stand out for this award. He has gone above and beyond to ensure swimmers feel welcome and included, and we feel he his truly deserving of being recognised.

Andy is the club personified. He lives the club’s values and I couldn’t think of a better first impression for any new member to Newcastle Staffs Swimming Club.”

“Andy has met all new trialists and their families personally, ensuring a great first impression, which almost always converted to a new member. Andy develops a strong relationship quickly with new families by making himself available at training sessions to check they’ve settled in.”

Andy has gone above and beyond his role to provide swimmers with the opportunity to take part in the sport, some examples include:

  • Sourcing second-hand kit for those who can’t afford it.
  • Researched and secured funding for our Ukrainian swimmers to cover their training fees for 9 months.
  • Supported the coaches with technical help on our club software
  • Supported our Competitions Secretary by anticipating membership upgrades from ‘train’ to ‘compete’.
  • Proactively developed new recruitment criteria to ensure we prioritise young talent for the long term benefit of the club.
  • Raised awareness about autistic and deaf swimmers.
  • Pro-actively proposed a solution to implement a 6 week intensive skills programme for our junior squad to support the swimmers and coaches in the club.

Andy’s nomination demonstrates his unwavering support for everyone in his club, and a passion for the sport. Thank you Andy for all your hard work.

Well done Andy!
