With Deepest Sympathy – Remembering Joyce Gatland
It is with deepest sympathy that we announce the passing of Joyce Gatland, a beloved and inspirational figure from Kingsbury Aquarius Swimming Club.
Joyce first became a swimming teacher at Kingsbury School before founding Kingsbury Aquarius Swimming Club just over 50 years ago, in 1974 – a club that continues to thrive today. She taught all three of her children to swim and took them to galas across the country.
Joyce went on to coach a swimmer into the GB Team, later qualifying as a GB Coach herself. Known affectionately as “The Dragon” for her firm and determined approach – a nickname she wore with pride – she later became known as the “Gentle Dragon” as her tough exterior softened with age.
Through her dedication, Joyce established a proud legacy of nurturing swimmers to national and international levels of competition. Even after retiring at 65, she continued to work part-time at Kingsbury Pool and remained closely involved with the club, with her son-in-law later serving as Chair.
Joyce leaves behind a wonderful legacy – teaching generations the joy of swimming, instilling important life skills, and inspiring countless people through her kindness, strength, and lifelong love of the water.
Our sincere condolences go to all her family and friends, especially her children Steven, Stuart, and Debra, and to everyone at Kingsbury Aquarius Swimming Club who had the privilege of knowing her.
